Walter E. Schardt Jr.

Walter E. “Wally” Schardt Jr., 75, of Shawano, went to his Eternal Home on Saturday morning, Jan. 16, 2016, at Evergreen Care Center, with his family by his side. Wally was born on Oct. 17, 1940, in Shawano, a son of the late Walter H. Sr. and Louise (Jesse) Schardt. He attended the Shawano schools, graduating from Shawano High School in 1958. Following high school, Wally became a Shawano County sheriff’s deputy. He served with the sheriff’s department, and later went to work with the Shawano Police Department. He was then elected sheriff of Shawano County, serving for eight years. On Nov. 25, 1961, he was united in marriage to the former Mary Ann Schlundt at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Antigo. The couple lived in Shawano their entire married life. Wally was a lifelong member of St. James Lutheran Church of Shawano. He is a former member of the Shawano Kiwanis Club. He was also a member of the Sons of the American Legion. In his younger days he was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved to spend time outdoors with his grandchildren. Wally was an accomplished golfer and enjoyed playing for many years. Wally is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Mary Ann, of the town of Wescott; his son, Daniel (Cory) Schardt, of Gillett; his daughter, Debra (Jim) Tinlin, of Bonduel; six grandchildren, Steve Staszak, Jeremy (Jenny) Staszak, Lisa Staszak, Travis Schardt, Keith Schardt and Andrew (Rebecca) Tinlin; two great-grandchildren, CoraLynne Staszak and Gavin Staszak; his sister, Ellie Dollak, of Waukesha; and several nieces and nephews. Wally was preceded in death by two sisters, June Nagreen and Sally Matejka; his brother, Chet Schardt; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Funeral services for Wally Schardt will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2016, at 10 a.m. at St. James Lutheran Church of Shawano. Pastor Steve Conradt will officiate. Interment will take place at Lake Drive Cemetery, town of Wescott. Relatives and friends may call at St. James Lutheran Church on Tuesday, from 9 a.m. until the hour of service.
