Volunteer Profile

Paul and Sue Hintz volunteer at the American Legion Post 117 in Shawano. Paul is a Shawano native, graduating from Bonduel High School. He worked for North Country Homes, then tended bar before going to work at Packerland Packing. Paul worked at the former T&C grocery, followed by going to school and working as an auto mechanic. He then worked for Brent Draheim Snow Removal and Lawn Care and now is on disability. Sue is a Shawano native, graduating from Shawano High School. She worked as a waitress at Ponderosa, T&C and Walmart. Sue now works for Brent Draheim Snow Removal and Lawn Care. Paul and Sue have been married 33 years and live in Shawano. They have four children and 12 grandchildren. Paul likes to hunt and fish, and together they go camping and spend time with their grandchildren, who often help them at the Legion. Q Where do you volunteer? Paul: “I volunteer for the Legion. I’m a member of the Sons of the American Legion. I’ve been here 29 years.” Sue: “There’s a lot of elderly people and they just can’t do it anymore.” Q What are the Sons of the American Legion? Paul: “It’s an organization that helps our fellow veterans. You don’t have to be in service, but you have to have a relative who served. My late grandfather, Charles ‘Rex’ Terrio, served in World War II.” Q How did you get started? Sue: “He married into it. My folks, Lloyd and Rosemary Koeller, have always been involved in the Legion.” Q What do you do? Sue: “We keep the hall clean and set up for parties. We clean and help in the kitchen. Our biggest is the SAL flag disposal. We go through thousands of them every year. We have to see if they are still usable.” Paul: “Sue does all the decorating. I do the janitorial work. Floors, bathrooms, lawn, shrubs, grounds keeping. We do a lot of the cooking for their steak fries and other events.” Q Why do you volunteer? Sue: “I don’t call it volunteering. I just call it helping my dad, uncles and a lot friends who were in service.” Paul: “I do it because I wasn’t in service and it’s my way of helping the veterans for serving the country. It’s my way of giving back.” Coming events at American Legion Post 117, 850 S. Lincoln St., Shawano, include Monte Carlo Night on April 11 and barbecue ribs on April 25.
