Wait until you see the set for “Suessical the Musical”!
Brandon Byng, the director of this fun show, has set his sights high, and I mean high! From the audience, you’ll watch the singing and dancing on the floor and then up, up, up! I think this set is the most ambitious we’ve ever had at the Mielke.
Rehearsals are in full swing, so mark the dates of July 11-13 and July 18-20 on your calendar so you don’t miss it. Bring the kids. They’ll love seeing all their favorite Suess characters come alive. When Brandon’s work crews were searching for building materials up in the loft area, they cleaned house, discarding anything up there that wasn’t usable any more. I went up there to check it out and I was floored! I could actually walk through the sound and light tech area without tripping on cables (they were all hanging up neatly on hooks) and climbing over old boxes of who knows what.
They did the job that should have been done a long time ago. Now, the rest of us have to show our thanks by keeping it orderly in the future and storing only materials that are re-usable.
On June 14, from 1-4 p.m., the Shawano County Arts Council will hold a reception and art display in the Mielke Arts Center lobby gallery. Special artist Steve Champine, of Howard, will be showing his beautiful watercolor paintings of wildlife and the outdoors. Steve was an avid outdoorsman and hunter until he had a hunting accident. Now he is still able to show his love for the outdoors through his paintings, which are outstanding. The reception is open to the public.
Our new “green room” (which is now actually orange) in the theater is proving to be an invaluable room to our guild members. The Box in the Wood Theatre Guild held its meeting there Monday. We had ready access to the refrigerator for bottles of water, and since some members brought snacks (our meetings are informal) we could easily clean everything up as we have a sink and cleaning materials a few feet away. We bought a new coffee pot and plan on bringing the microwave into the area as well. All of this is located in the southwest corner of this newly expanded space, so it leaves three quarters of the room open for line study and break area for cast members during rehearsals. It proved to be a perfect place for moms and dads to camp out with the younger children during our Christmas show. The little ones could play with games and eat snacks until it was time for them to go on stage. Emil Kriewaldt, for whom the room is named, would be pleased.
We are again having a “Stuff from the Theatre Shed” sale Aug. 22-23. Cheryl Folkerts will be in charge, since she is our costume and prop lady. It’s always a fun day as we thin out our overstock items and make some money to boot. So, if your group needs costumes, your college student needs some used furniture, or you like funky clothes, come on over.
Last, but not least, we have changed the dates for our fall show, “Rest Assured.” Director Mary Madsen has decided to open the play on the original date of Oct. 3. As part of the Miles of Art Tour, we will have performances on Oct. 4 and Oct. 5. The show will repeat the next weekend, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 10-12.
