With a limited participation against 103 other teams at Wausau West, Shawano’s wrestlers captured fourth-, seventh- and eighth-place finishes Jan. 20.
Courtney Schenk was Shawano’s fourth-place finisher.
“She did a great job opening up her offensive attacks and pushing the pace in her matches,” coach Mike Homan said. “We talked last week about how she needed to open up her offense, and that is exactly what she did today. She did a great job attacking and getting to the legs of her opponents. It is great to see her wrestling well as we near the postseason.”
Onna Hermann placed seventh.
“Onna Hermann had a tough bracket loaded with multiple state place winners,” Homan said. “She battled all day and did a good job finishing in seventh place.”
Lily Tomas placed eighth.
“Lily has not been wrestling very long and is learning the sport as we move through the season,” Homan said. “She is doing a great job picking up all of the new techniques. We look forward to her continuing to improve each week.”
Menasha 48, Shawano 12
Shawano struggled from the start and found themselves on the losing end of a 48-12 dual conference match against Menasha girls on Jan. 18.
Shawano gave up a forfeit at 107 pounds, and Jenna Moede was pinned in 2:59 at 114.
At 120, Hermann earned a fall in 23 seconds.
That was followed by four pins by Menasha.
At 126, Caitlyn Moede was pinned in 3:41. At 132, Breleigh Thornock was pinned in 1:43. At 138, Adalyn Barkley was pinned in 1:15, and at 145, Vivian Waldburger was pinned in 3:44,
Finally, at 152, Schenk earned a fall in 1:10.
Shawano gave up a forfeit at 165, and Tomas was pinned in 2:55.
“Tonight is one of those opportunities where we get to see who we are and how we can respond to adversity,” Homan said. “We did not wrestle the way we want, and we need to make some changes as we move forward. I’m excited to see how our girls respond as we go back to practice and get some work in. We will improve as we enter our last quarter of the season and move toward the sectional tournament.”
UW-Stevens Point
The Shawano girls wrestling team dropped two of three matches at UW-Stevens Point on Jan. 16.
Shawano was defeated by Wausau West 42-30 and Nekoosa/Assumption/Port Edwards 39-30, while beating Kimberly 48-18.
Against Wausau West, the Hawks forfeited four weight classes due to injury and wrestlers not in attendance.
“We wrestled eight matches in each dual and did very well,” Homan said.
In the first dual with Wausau West, Shawano won five of its eight matches. Winners during that first dual were Hermann, Thornock, Caitlyn Moede, Schenk and Tomas.
“Each of these girls earned falls in their match and did a great job scoring team points,” Homan said. “The forfeit points were just too much to overcome.”
The next dual was against Nekoosa/Assumption/Port Edwards. Shawano also won five matches in this dual. Winners were Hermann, Thornock, Caitlyn Moede, Waldburger and Schenk. The girls again won by falls and racked up 30 team points.
“We won some quality matches in this dual but just came up short in the end,” Homan said.
In the victory over Kimberly, winners were Jenna Moede, Hermann, Thornock, Caitlyn Moede, Barkley, Vivian, Schenk and Tomas.
“It was a great way to finish the night,” Homan said. “This team wrestled well tonight and won more matches than we lost. We have room to grow and get better as we look forward to the next step in our season. These girls all have great opportunities to move forward towards the end of the season.”
Shawano is now 2-2 after the holiday break.
