A contested shot with three seconds remaining on the clock gave the Blue Jays a 54-53 win.
Shawano held a one-point lead with 11 seconds left in the game before Merrill’s game-winning basket.
“The Hawks played hard all the way to the end and just ran out of time,” coach Joel Doxtator said.
The Hawks were led by Logan Simple’s 23 points and Will Verkuilen’s 15 points.
Bonduel 74, Menominee Nation 53
Cade Johnson scored 20 points to lead Bonduel to a 74-53 win over Menominee Nation.
Also scoring in double digits for the Bears were Race Anvelink with 15, Quinn Wesenberg with 11 and Ryan Westrich with 10.
Bonduel improved to 3-0 in the Central Wisconsin East Conference and 5-0 overall.
Freedom 76, Oconto Falls 26
Evan Yuma and Jameson Beaman each scored eight points in the Panthers’ 76-26 loss to Freedom.
Beaman also notched seven rebounds, Yuma and Aydien Wold each had two assists, and Emerich Skarban had a pair of steals.
Wittenberg-Birnamwood 77, Weyauwega-Fremont 46
Wittenberg-Birnamwood moved to 3-0 in the Central Wisconsin East Conference with a 77-46 win over Weyauwega-Fremont.
At about the halfway point of the first half, the Chargers started to build a comfortable lead and never looked back as they proceeded to dismantle the Warhawks.
“I thought we got our best defensive effort of the year from the boys,” coach Garrett Rogowski said. “We also executed our transition offense well and capitalized on a number of turnovers.” Jett Rogowski paced a balanced scoring attack for the Chargers with 26 points including a trio of 3-pointers.
Zandyr Barke scored 14 points, and Oliver Fraaza and Jaden Clark each had 10.
Tigerton 73, Gresham 31
Five players scored in double digits as the Tigerton Tigers defeated the Gresham Wildcats 73-31.
James Brady led Tigerton with 14 points.
Ethan Carlson scored 13 points, including three 3-pointers, and Caleb Dahlstrom added 12. Sam Anheuser scored 11 points, and Joey Zimdars cashed in with 10 points.
Brady led Tigerton with eight rebounds, Anheuser had five assists, and Dahlstrom had seven steals.
