The Wisconsin 4-H Shooting Sports program is more than target practice; it’s an opportunity for youth to build skills and confidence in archery, air rifle, shot gun and more, under the guidance of dedicated adult volunteers.
Locally, the Shawano County 4-H Shooting Sports program welcomes participants from ages 8-19. Youth begin with guided practices and can go on to participate in local and statewide shoots — even national competitions.
Among the newest members this year is 14-year-old Molly Hanson, who enrolled in the shooting sports project for the first time and has quickly developed a passion for archery. Her experience was made even more meaningful thanks to the generosity of Shawano resident Larry Parshen and Elite Archery, who donated an Elite Ember RTS bow to help her grow her skills.
“I appreciate Larry for donating the bow, setting it up for me and for teaching me how to use it,” Hanson said. “It’s been fun to watch the improvement as I keep practicing. I’ve learned a lot in my first year of shooting sports and look forward to making archery a lifelong skill.”
Hanson put her new equipment to good use at the Shawano County 4-H All Star Summer Archery Shootout and the Triple Crown Statewide Invitational in Marshfield in July.
The success of the 4-H Shooting Sports project depends on a network of volunteers, mentors and generous community members like Parshen. Their contributions help ensure youth have access to quality instruction, equipment and experiences that leave a lasting impact.
