Shawano Community High School’s girls tennis team started their season with a two-day, six-match invite in the Green Bay area. On Aug. 19, the Hawks started out 2-1, then fell 0-3 on Aug. 20.
In its division, Shawano played against Green Bay Preble, Howards Grove, Menominee (Michigan), Eau Claire Regis, Onalaska Luther and New Richmond. Eleven other teams competed in two other divisions. The new Hawks tennis team played 16 players over the two days. Top performers for the two days were Rachael Carroll, who went 4-1 at singles and 1-0 at doubles, and Ireland Setterman, who was 2-2 at singles and 1-1 at doubles.
Aug. 19
Green Bay Preble 4, Shawano 3
Carroll, playing at No. 2 singles, won 6-1, 6-3. Also winning at singles were No. 3 player Hadley Rettke 6-1, 6-3, and No. 4 Laney Rich 6-4, 6-1.
Ireland Setterman lost 6-2, 4-6, 10-4 at No. 1 singles.
Losing in doubles were the No. 1 team of Olivia Dobratz and Claire Weiland 6-3, 6-2; the No. 2 team of Madison Miller and Lana Owens 6-1, 6-1; and the No. 3 duo of Ava Hoffman and Harper Rettke 6-3, 6-4.
Shawano 5, Menominee 2
The Hawks won all singles matches, with three of the four wins taking three sets. Carroll, at No. 1, won 2-6, 6-1, 11-9. Setterman, at No. 2, won 6-2, 3-6, 10-8. Hoffman won at No. 3 by scores of 7-6 (5), 2-6, 11-9; and Amelia Belter won at No. 4 by scores of 6-3, 6-2.
Miller and Owens won at No. 3 doubles 6-1, 6-2.
The two losses at doubles were from No. 1’s Hadley Rettke and Rich 6-4, 6-3, and No. 2’s Dobratz and Weiland 2-6, 6-1, 10-5.
Shawano 4, Howards Grove 3
Shawano won two singles matches and two doubles matches.
Hadley Rettke won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, and Dobratz won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4.
Carroll and Setterman teamed up at No. 1 doubles and won 6-2, 4-6, 10-3, while Miller and Owens won 6-1, 2-6, 10-7. Coming up short were No. 2 singles player Rich at 6-2, 6-3; No. 3 singles player Weiland at 6-2, 6-1; and the No. 3 duo of Harper Rettke and Morgan Strebel at 5-7, 6-4, 10-3.
Aug. 20
Onalaska Luther 6, Shawano 1
Shawano’s only win came from Carroll at No. 2 singles by scores of 6-1, 6-0. Setterman, Hadley Rettke and Rich all lost their singles matches. Losses at doubles were recorded by Weiland and Dobratz at No. 1, Owens and Miller at No. 2 and Caroline Bergman and Belter at No. 3.
Eau Claire Regis 6, Shawano 1
The Hawks’ sole victory was from Setterman winning 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. Carroll, Hadley Rettke and Rich lost in singles play.
Losing in doubles play were the duos of Dobratz and Weiland, Miller and Owens, and Chloe Gilling and Bergman.
New Richmond 6, Shawano 1
In what was all too common of a pattern, Shawano only managed one win in this match. This time it Carroll winning at No. 1 singles.
Rich, Bergman and Belter lost their singles matches. Losing at doubles were Setterman and Hadley Rettke by scores of 6-1, 4-6, 10-3; Weiland and Dobratz; and Ruby Onesti and Jaelyn Hietpas.
