Shawano boys defeat Green Bay United

Shawano’s boys wrestlers continue to score big and are gearing up for a conference title this year. On Jan. 25, Shawano defeated Green Bay United 63-15 at Green Bay West. At 5-0 in the conference and 12-4 overall, the Hawks are on the brink of notching their sixth straight conference title. The team was scheduled to play against Xavier on Feb. 1. The Jan. 25 meet started with forfeits and 106 and 113 pounds, then at 120, Alex Montour won a tight match 10-9. Austin Stickney earned a fall at 126. Owen Montour, Kody Popelka and Drake Herm all earned forfeits from 132-144. At 150, Marcus Cicero was pinned, at 1:57. Carsen Herm earned a fall, at 165, Drew Chelberg earned a fall in the first period with a near side cradle. “We dropped a close decision 9-7 by Mason Theis at 175,” coach Mike Homan said. At 190, Connor Chelberg earned a fall; At 215, Shawano dropped another match by fall, and at 285, Brayen Boivin earned a fall. “The team did everything they needed to do to come away with a win,” Homan said. “I thought we wrestled some good matches tonight. Brayen Boivin was able to earn his first varsity win. He stepped in at 285 tonight due to an injury and did a good job. I like the way he has been working in practice the last few weeks.”
