The Machickanee Forest Shooting Range remains closed nearly a month after neighbors reported hearing rapid fire and said bullets were landing in their yards.
The range, built in 2003 on Garrity Road in Morgan, had been open from dawn to dusk 365 days of the year before the sudden closure on May 2.
Sheriff Michael Jansen said the incident that prompted the closure is still under investigation. There have been no arrests or citations.
Robert Skalitzky, director of the Oconto County Forestry, Parks and Recreation Department, said he’s had a handful of complaints about the extended closure and a handful of requests seeking to close the range permanently or relocate it.
Skalitzky met Friday with Department of Natural Resources specialists to discuss safety issues at the range. The Forest, Parks and Recreation Committee that oversees the range will meet on June 4.
The county plans to start work this summer on a short-distance range for pistol use and 50-yard range for shotgun use. The range has 19 stations now, mostly of 100 yards, with two 25-yard stations.
