Reflecting on the Fox

I have driven over the Leo Frigo Memorial Bridge in Green Bay countless times. I never really enjoyed that journey, because I am afraid of heights, and let’s face it, that bridge is high, so I always looked straight ahead. This past week I didn’t drive over that bridge, rather, I cruised right under it, aboard the Foxy Lady. Normally the Foxy Lady sails up the Fox River into Green Bay, but for some reason, the draw bridge wasn’t able to open up, so we went out into the Bay of Green Bay instead. As we were traveling the captain told us about the buildings along the shore. Right now downtown Green Bay is a growing area, with restaurants, office buildings and upscale housing being readied for what is thought to be a popular area. As I took it all in, I couldn’t help but think that life is made up of little choices, and because of some I had made this year, I was cruising on a boat on a beautiful August day in Green Bay. It was only because I decided I wanted to get out and exercise that I joined Total Fitness in January. While there, I tend to see the same people over and over. I know some of their first names, but very few last names. None of that really matters, because everyone is friendly, and now and then an invitation is issued. A few weeks back someone asked me if I would like to take a trip to Green Bay for a cruise on the Foxy Lady. I have been on a quite a few cruises in different areas of Wisconsin, but never on the Foxy Lady, so I said yes. Everyone was meeting at a certain time and place in Shawano, and I was one of the group that was going. One woman in a van got out and said if someone wanted to ride, we could go with her. I didn’t know her, but I and a couple of others got in her van. As we were traveling, and sharing who we were, the passenger in the front indicated that we should know each other. In our conversation we discovered we were confirmed together at St Martin’s Lutheran Church in Clintonville. “Small world,” we both agreed. All in all, it was a relaxing and fun day, filled with visiting, laughter and sight seeing. We marveled over the fact that there were pelicans in the Green Bay area. At first we saw them bobbing around in the water, with the ever present sea gulls hovering overhead. As we got out into the bay, the captain noted an island, which had once been filled with sea gulls, is now taken over by three different kinds of pelicans. As we cruised back to the dock, there was a long line of birds lined up on a strip of dry land. There were all different types and colors of birds, all standing together, almost like they were posed. This weekend Green Bay will welcome the tall ships that are coming to sail through that area. We were able to see the tents that had been set up for the occasion. While I won’t be there for the festivities, I will be able to imagine them in my mind.
