Falls narrowly loses to Denmark
Freshman McKenna Kussow allowed four runs through seven innings, but the offense could manage only two runs as the Oconto Falls High School softball team lost 4-2 to Denmark on Thursday.
Kussow protected a 1-0 lead until the sixth inning when Denmark (19-3, 11-2 Bay) scored four runs.
Kussow allowed two hits and struck out five batters the first five innings.
Panthers leadoff hitter Liz Manns (1 for 3) scored in the first inning off a McKenna Holman double, but Oconto Falls (4-10, 4-8 Bay Conference) could not get its second run until the seventh inning when senior outfielder Nicolle Sparks scored.
Gillett still in search of win
Despite hits from Brian Zahn, Korey Badeck and Eric Fischer, the Gillett High School baseball team remains winless (0-10, 0-10 Marinette & Oconto Conference) after losing 8-1 at Niagara (2-3, 2-3 M&O) on May 13.
The Tigers scored their sole run in the top of the sixth inning when Fischer came around to score on an fielding error by Niagara.
Pitchers Derek Zahn and Bryce Cibulka were unable to contain Niagara’s leadoff hitter Chase Champagne and second hitter Dillon Nevens, who batted a combined 5 for 8 with three runs scored and two doubles.
Cibulka struck out six batters and walked one through four innings but allowed six of Niagara’s eight hits.
STAA/Lena swept by Crivitz
STAA/Lena jumped off to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Crivitz High School in Game 2 of a softball doubleheader Thursday, but the Wolverines responded with six runs the bottom of the first en route to an 11-8 win to sweep the twinbill.
Catcher and leadoff hitter Kayla Van Lanen scored three runs and batted 2 for 3 with three runs scored and a walk. Linsey Hannon batted 3 for 4 with two runs scored. Sarah Porras collected three hits in four plate appearances.
Van Lanen collected three of STAA/Lena’s five hits and scored the team’s sole run in the 14-1 game 1 loss.
The team was unable to overcome a 14-strikeout performance by Crivitz starter Amanda Pickett, who also walked two batters through seven innings.
