With a fifth-place showing at the Bay Conference tournament May 20 at Brown County Golf Course, the Oconto Falls High School golf team finished fourth in the final conference standings.
Marinette and New London tied for the conference lead with 30 points, with Marinette taking first and New London taking second at the conference meet, edging out third-place Shawano by just a stroke, 336-335. Oconto Falls (355) took fifth behind West De Pere (349).
Heading into the meet, Oconto Falls and Shawano were tied with 10 conference points each. Oconto Falls earned eight points to finish with 18, behind Shawano (22) and tied with West De Pere for fourth in the standings.
“If we played our best, we’d probably take third,” Oconto Falls coach Scott Schroeder said. “If we play worse, we finish closer to sixth or seventh. I think we played solid.”
“That third-place battle, it was us, Oconto Falls, Hortonville and West De Pere,” Shawano coach Dean Kugler said. “They were all right on our tails.”
Kyle Fiedler’s 86 led the Panthers’ golfers. Jacob Stoinski and James Salscheider both came in at 88. Ben Stoinski carded 93.
“I know how hard those guys work,” Schroeder said. “They could have played better, but I think they weren’t unsatisfied with their play.”
Schroeder said Shawano and New London played really well, especially given the wet conditions. He said his team also handled those conditions well.
“It makes every shot a little bit harder when the ground is wet,” Schroeder said. “It’s just another variable that can frustrate a golfer.”
The team competed in the WIAA Division 2 Regional at Irish Waters Golf Course in Freedom on Tuesday. Results from that event were not available by the Times Herald’s press time.
Schroeder said he was hoping for his team to hit its potential in the tournament.
“We had one nine-hole match earlier in the year where everybody played well,” he said. “That set the pace for them. They know that they can do it.”
