The Oconto Area Humane Society & Animal Shelter is one of many organizations helping homeless animals across the state.
For more than a year, the OAHS has partnered with other shelters by taking in and finding homes for animals the shelters have difficulty placing. These shelters are generally located many miles away, and Badger Rescue Animal Transport Services Inc. helps to transport the animals.
BRATS transported its first animal in October 2008. As of June, it has transported 13,658 animals from Wisconsin shelters to other Wisconsin-based shelters and rescues. Starting with five drivers, the organization now has over 50. They transport dogs, cats, birds, bunnies, reptiles and other critters.
If an animal in a Wisconsin shelter needs a place to go, BRATS will find a way to transport the animal to a place where it has a better chance for adoption.
Drivers for BRATS appreciate the opportunity to help animals. Not everyone has the capacity to foster an animal, raise funds or run a shelter, but just about everyone can drive.
The OAHS is a regular part of the BRATS route. The drivers say they enjoy coming to Oconto, and the staff here is excited to welcome the new animals they deliver. The drivers are intrigued that the small “country shelter” is able to adopt out the number of animals it does, especially the bully breeds they bring to Oconto.
Without BRATS, the OAHS would not be able to unite so many animals with their forever family. BRATS is honored to support the OAHS, and OAHS is grateful for the service BRATS provides.
