Five months after losing its agriculture agent, Oconto County is close to hiring a replacement. Two finalists were interviewed Monday by the Extension Education Committee of the County Board, after advancing from an initial interview conducted by University of Wisconsin-Extension personnel. According to Guy Gooding, committee chair, both candidates were well-qualified and would be a good fit for the county.

The Oconto Falls American Legion baseball team came up one game short of making the Class AA state tournament, losing a regional semifinal 3-2 at Sturgeon Bay on Monday. Because Kewaunee County, which is hosting the state tournament and has an automatic bid, made the regional final, the semifinal winner was guaranteed a spot in the state tournament. Sandra Ruth “Sandy” Banaszynski, 75, of Cecil, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, July 23, surrounded by her family after a long battle with diabetes. Born July 20, 1938, in Oconto Falls to the late Elmer and Toddy Krueger, Sandy graduated from Oconto Falls High School with the class of 1956. On Sept. 8, 1957, she was united in marriage to Ben Banaszynski at Assumption BVM of Pulaski.

Lois May Schmidt (Berholtz), 86, passed away peacefully at her home on Shawano Lake. She was born March 24, 1927, in Appleton, the daughter of the late John and Tina Berholtz. Lois married Earl J. Schmidt on Oct. 12, 1946, in Appleton. She loved to fish on Shawano Lake. She also loved to bowl for many years in Appleton and in Shawano. She enjoyed her home on the lake since retiring in 1984.
