The Shawano School Board reluctantly accepted Superintendent Todd Carlson’s resignation Tuesday night following a 2½-hour, closed-door session.
The board voted 5-4 to accept Carlson’s resignation.
Donald K. Peterson, of Napa, Calif., passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013, at Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa.
He was born Sept. 28, 1921, in Oconto Falls to Frank and Margaret (Kadlec) Peterson. He graduated from Marinette High School on May 31, 1938.
He was married on Nov. 4, 1944, to Ione Mitchell in Bonduel. She preceded him in death on Sept. 18, 2005. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Napa.
Lulu Knapowski, 91, of 15392 Island Lake Road, Mountain, formerly of Green Bay, passed away on Sept. 2, 2013.
Lulu was born Aug. 17, 1922, to the late Fred and Mary (Hegnet) Meunier.
She is survived by her son, Louis (Jean), of Suring; grandchildren, Eric (Jen), of Green Bay, Hailey (Andy), of Suring, Wyatt (Ryne), of Suring; great-grandchildren, Cooper, Gabby and Saige.
Sylvia M. Christensen, 89, MeadowLands of Oconto Falls, formerly Lena, went to the Lord on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013. She was born Jan. 11, 1924, in Cooks County, Mich., to the late Martin and Rose (Boehm) Smits.
On Dec. 9, 1944, Sylvia married Quentin “Squint” Christensen at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Spruce.
Arletta R. Thibadeau, 87, Gillett, entered into rest Friday, Aug. 30, 2013, at New Care Nursing Home in Crivitz. She was born on Aug. 27, 1926, in Oconto Falls to the late Elmer Landin and Leona Henne.
As a young woman, Arletta worked for her father at Landin Motor Co., and later on in life began working for the Gillett School District for many years.
Arletta also belonged to the VFW and other organizations such as the St.
MaryAnn Genke, our tiny, broken, sweet mom, passed away on Aug. 27, 2013. She is now free of pain and walking hand and hand with God.
She was born in Milwaukee on Aug. 21, 1924, to Walter and Charlotte Niemann. She married Gilbert Genke on July 3, 1948. Together they had four children.
MaryAnn was a beautiful dressmaker and seamstress and worked for the Women’s Exchange, where she created specialty clothing.
The annual Lena Lions Dairyfest celebration will be held Saturday, Sept. 7, at the St. Anne Parish grounds.
The first event of the day will be the Stampede 5K walk-run competition. Registration will open at 6 a.m. at Lena High School, and the race begins at 8 a.m.

Many who spend their days on the path around the Falls and were around 50 years ago would agree there was an undeniable energy around the civil rights movement and the inspiration that came from Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech.
He was a powerful orator and had the passion to go with his words.
