The Birnamwood Area Community Cupboard was formed by necessity. “Pastor Jeff Krueger was giving food out of his own cupboard,” said Pat White, vice president of the food pantry. In 1984 a group of pastors and representatives from area churches established a food pantry. “The purpose was to provide emergency food or other resources to families or individuals who have an immediate need,” said Kathy Zarda, secretary since 1999. Pat White volunteers for several different activities at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Mattoon. White, 77, is a Mattoon native, graduating from the former Mattoon High School. She and her husband, Dale, owned and operated a meat market and a mink farm. Then she was a homemaker, raising five children. Pat and Dale, who was a supervisor for Miron Construction, were married 56 years before his death.

Hawks top New London The Shawano Community High School volleyball team beat New London in four sets Thursday in Shawano. The Hawks (1-2 Bay) beat Bay Conference foe New London (1-1) 25-12, 22-25, 25-18, 25-12. Bella Gonzalez and Erika Dunnam led Shawano in kills with seven each. Dunnam had six blocks. Annelies Young had 16 assists, three service aces and nine digs.

Bonduel golfers seventh at conference meet
The Bonduel High School girls golf team finished seventh at the Eastern Valley Conference meet Wednesday at Wander Springs Golf Course in Greenleaf. The Bears finished the season sixth in the conference. Taylor Diemel led Bonduel with a round of 107. Elizabeth Schaal shot a 118, Samantha Schaal 132 and Danielle Lautenbach 138. Fox Valley Lutheran took first at the meet with a score of 395 to cap its Eastern Valley Conference championship.

Bears rally to sweep Tigers
With the Bonduel High School and Gillett volleyball teams, and fans, decked out in pink for the annual “Digging for a Cure” nonconference match Tuesday, it looked as if Gillett would force a fourth game. The Bears, who won the first two games 25-20 and 25-16, were down 20-10 after a 15-5 run by Gillett. Board deadlocks over employee handbook
It’s back to the drawing board for the Shawano County employee handbook. Two hours of debate about the proposed new handbook Wednesday night by the County Board ended in a 12-12 deadlock, which means the Administrative Committee will have to revisit the handbook to consider revisions to gain the support of more supervisors. County Board OKs 50 new radios
The Shawano County Sheriff’s Department will get 50 new radios to replace models made obsolete by the county’s new simulcast system. The County Board voted 19-6 Wednesday to spend $210,840 to purchase the radios — 34 in patrol vehicles and 16 portable units — that have little to no coverage under the new digital system.
