Downtown gaining from changing retail market

It wasn’t that long ago when big box stores such as Walmart and large retail chains looked poised to put an end to small businesses and once-thriving downtowns. Coffeehouse introduces open mic night
Although only a few weeks old, the open mic night at Glas, The Green Coffeehouse already has provided some memorable moments and pleasant surprises. Organizers hope it’s just the start of filling a Tuesday night niche for the community. The coffeehouse opened in the Cellcom building at 511 N. Main St. in October. It held its first open mic night Jan.

Clintonville flowers to return despite budget cuts
Despite being cut from the city budget this year, there will be flower baskets on Clintonvillle’s Main Street again this summer. The Common Council on Tuesday approved a special account for donations to the program. Interim City Administrator Chuck Kell said the account funds will not count toward the city’s revenue cap. Forty-five baskets are being ordered.

Clintonville goes out of town for brush truck chassis
The chassis for the city of Clintonville’s new brush truck will come from a Hortonville company rather than Clintonville Motors. In December, the Clintonville Common Council approved a bid of $158,500 from E.J. Metals of New London for the truck.

Tauchen keeps family wrestling tradition alive
A lot of young brothers emulating the older siblings they look up to might wear similar clothes, or listen to the same music. Dan Tauchen had a more novel approach. The Bonduel High School senior punctuated his stellar year on Feb. 7 by defeating Rosholt’s Tony Kontney 8-2 to win the 160-pound division of the Central Wisconsin Conference-8 meet.

Martin P. Malone
Martin P. Malone, 72, of Bowler, passed away peacefully on Monday, Feb. 16, 2015, in Shawano. Martin was born on Sept. 21, 1942, in the town of Red Springs, the son of the late Arthur and Cleo (Welch) Malone. Martin lived in Milwaukee for several years before returning to the area in 1993.

June Doris Drake
June Doris Drake, 95, of Shawano, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2015, at Birch Hill Nursing Home. June was born on June 15, 1919, at the family farm in Bartelme Township, Shawano County, the daughter of the late Herman and Ella (Giessel) Maas. On Sept. 16, 1939, she married Oscar Drake. She spent most of her life living on the North Shore of Shawano Lake.
