Jill Whiteman is chairperson of the Friends of Hospice, which is holding its annual golf outing July 29 at Golden Sands Golf Club in Cecil. Born and raised in Shawano, Whiteman graduated from Shawano High School. She earned a degree in communication and public relations from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Letter: Summer reading activities continue at library
To the editor: Summer is flying by. Have you stopped into the Shawano City-County Library to take part in our summer reading activities? We offer different reading programs that cover all age ranges. Kids who read over summer retain more of their reading skills when they start the next school year. We will be hosting a Scholastic Book Fair from July 20-25. Everyone responsible for keeping parks clean
This column is called “Positively Shawano” and I enjoy telling readers about the exciting things going on in our community. I receive a great deal of feedback from people who appreciate hearing the positives. Today, however, I need to spend some time pointing out a few concerns and asking for your help. Learning comes in many forms, from many sources
I have heard it said that one is never too old to learn, and I learned a couple of things this week. One important thing is that if you cough up blood, you should seek medical help. If you cough up blood two mornings in a row, you should not wait until Monday to call the doctor’s office. I began coughing early last week. Then on Thursday and Friday morning, I coughed up blood.

2nd-crop hay harvest
As of this writing, we’ve got a good start on our second-crop hay harvest. This time around the crop is cut, dried, side-raked and then baled. The process from cutting to harvesting takes days of sun in a row and a bit of wind to dry down the rows of hay. We bale a few fields with our own equipment, using our baler, which makes those manageable, smaller square bales. There once was a time when we baled our entire second crop in that manner.

Owen Muthing leads Embarrass Fun Daze parade
Owen Muthing will be honored as parade marshal at the Embarrass Volunteer Fire Department’s 27th annual Embarrass Fun Daze on July 25 at the Embarrass Park. Muthing was a 30-year member of the Embarrass Fire Department, serving from 1973-2003. During that time, he achieved the rank of captain and served as secretary of the department for 24 years. He was a co-owner of Zimdar’s Plumbing & Heating in Embarrass.

County Board meeting canceled in July
A debate about structural changes in the Shawano County finance department is being postponed until August. County Board Chairman Jerry Erdmann has canceled the July board meeting and told board members the finance department will be discussed in August. A county committee is recommending reassigning the finance director’s duties to two other county employees who would receive pay raises.
