Water rate increase proposed in Gillett

The Gillett Sewer and Water Commission is seeking a 27 percent increase in water rates to boost annual income and fund future projects, according to its application filed with the Wisconsin Public Service Commission. Average residential customers paying $8.04 monthly in volume charges for 3,000 gallons of water would pay $10.21, or $2.17 more, for the same amount of water if the rate request is approved as submitted. Aug. 5 Deputies logged 30 incidents, including the following: ATV Complaint - Authorities investigated a report of kids riding a loud four-wheeler on Chicken Shack and Crawford roads in Oconto. Welfare Check - Authorities assisted with a report of children in a home with intoxicated adults on Oconto River Shores Lane in Oconto Falls.

City adopts changes to recycling pacts
The city of Gillett has decided to drop its recycling partnership with Oconto County and the town of Gillett. The move will take effect Jan. 1, when the city’s agreement with Great American Disposal begins. The Gillett City Council in June decided to contract with GAD for garbage and recyclable collection because of the cost of the service (the city spent $56,000 in 2013) and the age of the garbage truck.

Proceedings from Aug. 7 A sentencing hearing was held for Cody J. Ford, 21, De Pere, on a misdemeanor charge and a felony charge of child abuse-recklessly cause harm on Sept. 4 and Nov. 1, 2014, in Chase. The felony charge was amended to a felony charge of physical abuse of a child. He was sentenced to one year, six months incarceration and two years extended supervision.

Suring to interview, hire K-12 principal
Hiring a principal for the Suring School District will be discussed by the Board of Education when it meets in executive session on Wednesday, Aug. 12, in Conference Room 300 at Suring School, 411 Algoma St. The board is scheduled to interview candidates at 4:30 p.m.

A Oconto Falls woman, 27, reported receiving harassing telephone calls from an Oconto Falls man, 22, on July 25. A fight between two men was reported July 27 at the East Side Beach, 626 N. Main St.

Moving on to Main Street
Phase 2 of a two-part highway construction project began Monday in the Oconto Falls downtown business district. The $3.95 million state Department of Transportation project includes pavement removal and replacement, curb and gutter, sidewalks, storm sewer, street lighting, pavement marking and street signing. Due to construction, South Main Street to Cherry Street will be closed to through traffic this week for storm sewer installation.

Human remains found in county forest
The skeletal remains believed to be that of a missing Neenah man were found Sunday afternoon on county forest land in Bagley, according to a statement released jointly by the Oconto County Sheriff’s Department and Neenah Police Department. A group of bear hunters found a red Ford Ranger pick-up in a wooded pine plantation about 3 miles north of Suring, and a deputy responding to the scene verified the vehicle belonged to Kyle Blohm, last seen on

Let our conservative views be heard
To the editor: Last week’s paper had a letter to the editor that called me out by name. It was about Scott Walker and was long on rhetoric, and in my opinion, lacked any substance. It called for the “real people” of Wisconsin to say what they think about Scott Walker. Well, I am a real person and, yes, I have supported Scott Walker.
