Drivers serving up 30,000 meals a year

More than 30,000 meals were delivered to homebound Shawano County residents in 2025, with nearly another 4,900 served at congregate sites or as carryouts.

That’s according to Ericka Kowalkowski, the Aging and Disability Resource Center’s supervisor of aging programs, who oversees the nutrition program.

Shawano Knights donate funds to local charities

The Knights of Columbus Council 2836 Shawano recently distributed funds to the Shawano Area Food Pantry and Resource Center, Shawano Area Matthew 25 homeless shelter and Safe Haven domestic abuse shelter.

Deputy Grand Knight John Hoffman presented the checks totaling $1,200.

The funds were raised from pancake and porkie breakfasts and the Charlie’s County Market Red Barn projects.

Initial floor plans for courthouse unveiled

Architects have taken the required square footage numbers for the Shawano County government departments and turned them into a three-story floor plan for a new building.

The first of what is expected to be many versions of the layout was unveiled at the county’s public property meeting Jan. 15.

Kurt Berner, of The Samuels Group, said the plans will be used to start developing potential costs.

Costs mounting for shorter speedway

Shortening the Shawano Speedway from a half mile to a three-eighths mile track may not be as simple or cheap as once believed.

Grant Bystol, Shawano County highway commissioner, told members of the Shawano Area Agricultural Society, which operates the track, his department could complete the engineering and blueprints for about $15,000. He estimated a private firm’s costs would be more than $40,000.

Council approves 2026 road projects

The Shawano Common Council on Jan. 14 approved work on three streets to start in 2026 with new pavement, sewer and water improvements.

A 15-year-old boy from Lena died as the result of a snowmobile accident Jan. 13, according to a news release from the Oconto County Sheriff’s Department.

Sheriff Todd Skarban said law enforcement was notified of the single-vehicle crash at 7:32 p.m.
