The Oconto Falls High School forensics team entered its new season by taking third place at the North Eastern Conference Tournament championship hosted at Oconto Falls. The Panthers rounded out the top three with 146 points, following Wrightstown (251) and Denmark (168). Earning a first-place medal was Anna Burd in Public Address.

The city of Oconto Falls is still holding out hope that enough summer staff can be hired to provide lifeguard service at East Side Beach. When the 2024 budget was passed, city council members commented that a lack of candidates and fiscal constraints probably meant that no lifeguards would patrol the popular beach this summer.

Six members of the Shawano boys wrestling team will advance to sectional action following a successful round of regional wrestling Feb. 10 at Green Bay Preble. Moving on for the Hawks will be Dane Hodkiewicz, Owen Montour, Drake Herm, Carsen Herm, Drew Chelberg and Connor Chelberg. Drake Herm earned his 100th win during his first-round win.

When I selected “A Friend of the Family” by Stuart Field I had no idea how tangled the plot could be. I can’t really do justice to all the nuances of the parallel plot lines, so I will offer a thumbnail sketch. The Freeman family, Jake, Abby and their daughters Danni and Melanie are fairly typical. Danni is outgoing and friendly, while Melanie keeps to herself.

Friday, Feb. 9 Bonduel Bonduel crushed Manawa 70-28 in Central Wisconsin East Conference action. The Bears improved to 13-0 in league play and 21-2 overall. Bonduel was led by Hailee Thompson and her 19 points, including four triples, along with Ella Hischke with 14 and Audrey Weier with 10. Juliana Jacobs led the Bears with eight rebounds, with Thompson and Weier each grabbing seven, and Hischke and Hailey Zernicke each with six.

Saturday, Feb. 10 Bonduel Even when they’re not battling conference opponents, Bonduel finds the win column with its latest victory a 76-63 triumph over Valders. Race Anvelink led the Bears with 20 points, followed by Ryan Westrich with 19 and Noah Weier with 11. Colin Margelofsky scored eight, Cade Johnson and Quinn Wesenberg each had seven, Owen Springborn scored three and Sam Roberts had one.
