The Shawano School Board received a mixed bag of results Aug. 12 when it heard an oral report at the six-month mark of its partnership with Teachers on Call, a company that helps find substitutes when teachers and other staff are absent. In the past school year, the Shawano School District had 3,836 absences from teachers and paraprofessionals, an average of 427 per month or 22 spots to fill per day.

Shawano Community High School’s athletic programs might not be bringing home too many state trophies, but there’s plenty for them to be proud of, according to a report presented Aug. 12 to the Shawano School Board. Out of 752 enrolled students in the last school year, 339 of them were involved with one or more programs, which is about 45.1% of the entire student body, with 105 playing in two sports and 65 playing in three.

A Keshena man was sentenced Aug. 12 to two years in prison for the aggravated assault of his live-in girlfriend. Arrelio R. Escalante, 37, faced an advisory guideline sentence of 30-37 months in prison after pleading guilty in May to assault by strangulation.
