A Merrill man’s case involving child sexual assault was delayed once again Oct. 2 as his attorney requested more time to get an expert witness. Richard Jones Sr. said there has been no settlement agreed upon between the state and his client, James Kropf, 46, and that he and co-counsel Carly Krueger need more time to get the witness on boards. The court rescheduled the hearing for 9 a.m. Jan.

UW-Eau Claire Four hundred eighty-one incoming freshmen received scholarships from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire for the 2024-25 academic year, with many students receiving multiple awards. Randy David Kratz passed away unexpectedly Oct. 2, 2024. Randy was born June 9, 1959, to Norman and Beverly Kratz (Everard). Randy graduated from Oconto Falls High School in 1977. He proudly joined the Army from 1977-82, where he was honorably discharged as a sergeant. After returning to Oconto Falls, he started a family where he had Michael and Christopher.

Winter wheat production in Wisconsin was estimated at 18 million bushels, up 3% from 2023 according to the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service Small Grains 2024 Summary. Planted area, at 265,000 acres, was down 5% from last year. Winter wheat area harvested for grain was 220,000 acres, down 4% from last year.

The average price received by farmers for corn during August in Wisconsin was $3.73 per bushel according to the latest USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service Agricultural Prices report. This was 35 cents below the July price and $1.90 below August 2023. The Shawano Public Works Department has scheduled Oct. 14 for the beginning of fall curbside leaf collection. Leaves will be collected through Nov. 22. City residents should have their loose leaves at the curbside on their normal scheduled garbage collection day.

Corn stored in all positions in Wisconsin on Sept. 1 totaled 100 million bushels, up 35% from Sept. 1, 2023, according to the latest USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service Grain Stocks report. Of the total stocks, 46% were stored on-farm. The June-August 2024 indicated disappearance totaled 114 million bushels, 15% below the 134 million bushels from the same quarter the previous year.
