Bear season results show rebound in harvest and hunter success
Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) preliminary results for the 2024 bear season indicate hunters harvested 4,285 bears during the five-week season, a rebound from the below-average harvest of 2,922 bears taken last fall. “Several factors likely led to this season’s increase in harvest,” said Randy Johnson, DNR large carnivore specialist. “In 2023, we saw an incredible amount of acorns and other natural food production.

Martha L. Kruse
Martha L. Kruse, 96, of Oconto Falls, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family on Nov. 20, 2024. The daughter of Joseph and Sophie (Przybylski) Kaczorowski was born March 17, 1928, in the Town of Maple Grove. On Jan. 13, 1947, Martha married Gail Kruse Sr. The couple farmed together in the Town of Morgan until their retirement. She was a devoted mother and homemaker and was always there for her children.

Monthly production per Wisconsin cow up 5 pounds from last year
Milk production in Wisconsin during October totaled 2.69 billion pounds, down slightly from the previous October, according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service Milk Production report. The average number of milk cows during October, at 1.27 million head, was unchanged from last month but down 4,000 from October 2023.

Lake Region ag labor rates decline from 2023
There were 62,000 workers hired directly by farms in the Lake Region (Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin) during the reference week of July 7-13, according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service Farm Labor report. Farm operators paid their hired workers an average wage rate of $18.40 per hour, $1.24 below July 2023.

1-1 tech initiative part of WBSD library plan
The Wittenberg-Birnamwood School Board signed off Nov. 18 on a new five-year plan for its school libraries that includes plans for a 1-1 technology plan for students. “We have to, every five years, update our library plan,” said Superintendent Garrett Rogowski, noting that Birnamwood Elementary-Middle School Principal Chris Kulas also serves as the district’s library director.
