John R. Larson, 95, of Beloit, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2024, at Oak Park Place in Janesville. He was born on Jan. 24, 1929, in Duluth, Minnesota, the son of John and Mabel (Truckey) Larson. John was a 1947 Oconto Falls High School graduate. He was a veteran of the Wisconsin National Guard. John married Janice McKay on July 19, 1969, in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Stiles.

The Shawano Common Council signed off Nov. 20 on what City Administrator Eddie Sheppard described as a challenging puzzle — the 2025 budget. The budget includes a 31-cent increase in the tax rate, which means property owners will pay $9.10 per $1,000 of assessed valuation.

Employees at the Shawano County Planning and Development Department are looking for help in dealing with chicken complaints. Town officials aren’t eager to take on the problems themselves. “We know the county has limited funds, and the towns have less,” Supervisor James Przybylski said at the Nov. 20 county board meeting. “The county planning and zoning enforces the rules, which helps the towns that follow the county zone.

A former Lakewood man pleaded not guilty Nov. 21 to homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle and other charges in the Sept.

Shawano-Menominee County Circuit Court Judge William Kussel agreed Nov. 21 to delay the first-degree homicide trial for Michael E. Ingold after his attorney filed a motion to withdraw. The trial was originally scheduled to start Nov. 18 but was pushed back to Nov. 25 due to a number of motions filed prior to the start date.

Most area schools made the grade in 2024, even with the target moving, on the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction report cards, released Nov. 19. All of the school districts in Shawano and Oconto counties were at least three stars, which indicates that they’re meeting the standards DPI has laid out. Pulaski Community School District stood out with four stars, which signifies that district is exceeding expectations.

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) invites homeowners and renters to sign up for 2025 growing season notices in the landscape pesticide registry through Feb. 1, 2025. Registrants receive advance notice from commercial lawn care companies that apply pesticides to lawns, trees, and shrubs on nearby property.
