The second-to-last night of the 2014 racing season saw five drivers make return trips to victory lane Saturday at the Shawano Speedway. Nick Anvelink, who started in 10th place, won his fifth Late Model feature, and Travis VanStraten secured win number eight in IMCA Stock Car action. It was VanStraten’s fourth consecutive victory. Matt Oreskovich scored his second IMCA Modified win, and Jason Jach earned his second IMCA Sport Mod feature.

An elderly Tigerton man who went missing Sunday night was found alive and well Monday afternoon in a wooded area in the town of Morris. The Shawano County Sheriff’s Department received a call shortly before 8:30 p.m. Sunday that an 89-year-old man had left his residence in Tigerton about 6:30 p.m.

The members of the Pella Fire and Rescue Department are dedicated to helping the people of the Township of Pella. Jerry Weatherwax has been with the department for 22 years, the last six as fire chief. “I enjoy the part of helping people out,” said Weatherwax, who also spent 10 years on the Embarrass Fire Department.

Gini Reineke has volunteered at the Shawano County Historical Society for seven years. She was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the daughter in a military family that traveled extensively. Reineke graduated from Beaver Dam High School, and then earned a degree in history from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Trevor R. Arndt, 23, Tigerton, died Friday, Aug. 15, 2014, as the result of a motorcycle accident. He was born on Oct. 20, 1990, in Wausau, the son of Ervin and Phyllis (Allaire) Arndt. Trevor was a 2009 graduate of Tigerton High School. He then went to school at Fox Valley Technical College, graduating with a degree in power sports technology.

Kathryn “Kathy” Bartelt, 55, of Shawano, passed away Thursday, Aug. 21, 2014, in Neenah. Born on Jan. 1, 1959, she was the daughter of the late Robert Bartelt and Marva (Knope) Wege. Kathy owned and operated Quality Images and worked as a graphic design artist at North Star Casino. Kathy was very artistic and creative and enjoyed doing different crafts. She loved going to rummage sales and flea markets in her spare time.

Elaine E. Froemming, 86, of the Town of Belle Plaine, Shawano County, passed away Thursday morning, Aug. 21, 2014, at Greentree Health & Rehabilitation Center in Clintonville. Elaine was born on March 3, 1928, in the town of Larrabee, Waupaca County as the daughter of the late Gustav and Selma (Watters) Wolff.

Galen D. “Shorty” Dobbs, 71, of Shawano, passed away Thursday, Aug. 21, 2014, at his home. Born on Aug. 27, 1942, in Shawano, he was the son of the late Louis E. and Rose (Wilber) Dobbs. On February 15, 1997, Shorty was united in marriage to Nancy Kriefall, and was a very loving husband.

James “Jim” M. Kohn, 84, of Shawano, formerly of Cecil, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 21, 2014. Jim was born on Nov. 5, 1929, to the late Emil and Grace (Buelow) Kohn. On Jan. 1, 1982, Jim married Patricia Bocik. He was a long-time truck driver, long distance hauls. The road was his life.
