To the editor: Did you ever wonder how those ATV/UTV and snowmobile trails appear each year just in time for riding fun? Club volunteers spend countless hours working with landowners, putting up signs, brushing trails and getting grooming equipment ready. All clubs are volunteer groups and are always looking for new members. You may ask why you should join a club.

I don’t often play golf alone, but I recently went out to play a few holes, hoping to hook up with someone. To my surprise, the golf course was empty (Well, it was Nov. 4!), so I ended up playing by myself. And I truly enjoyed the afternoon. The empty course was very peaceful, very tranquil. I can’t say it was silent because I could hear the wind, the rustling of the dry leaves and an occasional bird, but it was very quiet.

Teenage musicians, actors and dancers will travel back to the 1960s for a production of the Tony Award winning musical “Bye Bye Birdie.” The production, featuring a cast of 27 students and a 15-piece pit band, opens Thursday at Oconto Falls High School. The musical was inspired by a real life event when Elvis Presley was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1957.

Suring High School senior Brooke Gauthier was named to the first team of the All-Marinette & Oconto Conference volleyball team last week, and three teammates from the second-place Eagles (14-2) also were recognized. Gauthier was second among Eagles hitters with 140 kills and contributed 194 service aces and 116 digs. Suring High School senior Creo VanBellinger was named to the All-Marinette & Oconto Conference football team last week, garnering a first-team selection after leading the conference in tackles with 166. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound linebacker, who was also second in the conference with five interceptions, was the Eagles’ sole representative on the first team. VanBellinger also notched second-team honors as a running back.

Lauren Herzog grew up watching her brother and sister compete in cross-country and track for Gillett Secondary School. She decided to follow in their footsteps. “My brother (Mark) and sister (Jenna) ran before me, and they had great coaches,” Herzog said. “When I was in middle school, I ran with the high schoolers at practice.” Now a freshman, Herzog was Gillett’s only competitor Nov.

Monte Noffke was named Back of the Year and joined two teammates on the All-Marinette & Oconto Conference football first team announced last week. Three other members of the Gillett Secondary School squad received second-team honors, and two more were honorable mention selections. “It was a great season and a great accomplishment,” Noffke said.
