School Board approves law enforcement MOU

The Shawano School Board unanimously voted Monday to permit off-duty officers with the Shawano Police Department and Shawano County Sheriff’s Department to carry firearms on campus. The school district currently allows on-duty officers, like school resource officer Jody Johnson, to carry weapons in any of the district’s four buildings, but if an off-duty officer did the same, he or she would be violating federal law. David M. Zachow
David M. Zachow, 53, of the town of Belle Plaine, Shawano County, passed away Friday, Nov. 28, 2014, at his home. David was born on January 16, 1961, in Milwaukee as the son of Gordon Zachow and the late Marlene (Zimmermann) Zachow. He graduated from Shawano High School in 1978. David then began working for his father at Zachow Plumbing where he became a master plumber.

Delores B. Fleming
Delores B. Fleming quietly went to heaven Nov. 30, 2014, at the age of 87. She was born Dec. 2, 1926, daughter of the late Fred and Frances (Windel) Wagner. On Nov. 9, 1946, she was united in marriage to Robert Fleming. He preceded her in death Nov. 11, 2013. They had celebrated 67 years of marriage together. For 45 years, Delores and Bob raised their family and farmed at R2, Pulaski. They retired in 1991 to their home on Shawano Lake.

Family Care expanding to Shawano, Menominee counties
Care Wisconsin will be offering Family Care in seven northeast Wisconsin counties in 2015. The counties include: Brown, Door, Kewaunee, Marinette, Oconto, Menominee, and Shawano. The award was made by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services. This is the first time Family Care has been offered in these seven counties. The Joint Finance Committee approved their inclusion on Nov.

Bears pull away from Gillett
Seniors Connor Rosin and Colton Dobratz and junior Peyton Czarapata all scored 10 points each, and the Bonduel High School boys basketball team beat Gillett 44-33 Saturday in Bonduel. Adam Werner’s 18 points were not enough to lift shorthanded Gillett, who lost 44-33 after keeping the game within 3 points until the final minutes. “The win is good,” Bonduel coach Duke Copp said.

Memories to warm the heart
About 100 people attended the Avenue of Lights lighting ceremony Saturday night at the East Side Beach in Oconto Falls. For some, the experience was bittersweet. People who have lost loved ones often search for ways to keep their memories alive, and sponsoring a tree for the Avenue of Lights is one way to do that. “I think it’s really special,” said Erica Beaumier, a member of the Oconto Falls Lioness Club and chair of the Avenue of Lights.

Shepherding a distant flock
St. Anne Parish in Lena and Coleman is one of a dozen parishes in the Green Bay Diocese now home to an international priest, according to Peter Gard, deacon at St. Anne’s and part-time international priest coordinator for the Diocese of Green Bay. Rev. Nonito Jesus Sirios Barra, parish administrator of St. Anne’s, is one of four priests from the Philippines. Three others are from Nigeria, three from Uganda, one from Tanzania and one from India.

What’s new on the Avenue?
The annual Avenue of Lights holiday celebration coordinated by the Oconto Falls Lioness Club ushered in the holiday season Saturday in Oconto Falls. The lights will be lit every night until the start of January. New this year at the North Main Street display are brightly lit snowflakes hung on light poles.
