Kay Gast has been volunteering at River Valley Church in Shawano for several years. Gast was born in Manawa and graduated from Little Wolf High School in Manawa. She moved to Shawano to work at the former Chef’s Inn, followed by Nehring’s Greenhouse, Eagle Knit, Penney’s, Schultz’s Family Store and Prange Way.

I thought it was funny that a week before Christmas all of the weather forecasts included a report on the chances of having a white Christmas. In the past, I always thought a white Christmas would be nice, but I never really wanted the snow to fall on or near Christmas. After all, snow means tricky travel when many people plan to travel. Even I prefer to travel when it is safe to do so.

Every year at this time, I take stock of the old year going out and the new one coming in. Rehashing the year, I reflect on what I could have done differently, including my relationship with Jesus, and how to prioritize in the new year. Resolutions don’t really sit well with me. I tend to shun making promises to myself that I will not necessarily keep.

Cecelia Mae Zhuckkahosee, 55, of Keshena, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2014. She was born on Nov. 17, 1959, to the late Allen and Agnes Christine (Warrington) Heath. She graduated from Menominee High School with the Class of 1978. Cecelia Heath married Lee Zhuckkahosee at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Neopit on Sept. 26, 1981. She was a longtime employee of the Menominee Loan Fund.

Laurel M. Rothwell, 91, of Shawano, died on Sunday, Dec. 21, 2014, in Shawano. Laurel was born on Feb. 6, 1923, in the town of Herman, Shawano County, the daughter of Otto and Ida (Marquardt) Waegli. She graduated from Shawano High School and Carroll College. In 1946, she was united in marriage to H. Gordon Rothwell, who preceded her in death. Laurel was the Worthy Matron O.E.S. in Shawano in 1955.

Rose Marie (nee Turney) Goodwill, 76, of Shawano, died on Friday, Dec. 26, 2014, in Green Bay. Rose was born on Feb. 14, 1938, in Keshena. She meet Robert “Goody” Goodwill in a laundry mat, and they were married in 1987 in Milwaukee. She was a nurse’s aide in Texas and Milwaukee and lived in Shawano for the past 15 years. Rose was a member of the St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Neopit.

Michael Kenneth John died unexpectedly of a heart attack Dec. 20 early in the morning. Due to medical reasons, Michael was staying with his parents, Ken and Donna John, who live on Shawano Lake. Michael was a gifted machinist who worked both in Milwaukee and Seattle, Washington.

Shawano Police Department Dec. 25 Police logged 14 incidents, including the following: OWI — A 26-year-old woman was arrested for operating while intoxicated at Green Bay and Hamlin streets. Suspicious — Police responded to a suspicious person complaint involving juveniles at Shawano Community Middle School, 1050 S.

A Shawano man was injured early Friday when his vehicle rolled over on state Highway 29 and was struck by another vehicle. The accident occurred just after 4 a.m. near County Road F in the town of Hartland. Jeremy Meyers, 33, was eastbound on Highway 29 when he swerved to avoid a deer, the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department said. His vehicle went into the median and rolled over.
