After-hours enrichment

When the regular school day ends, Suring Elementary students can choose to extend their day by attending the in-house Community Learning Center (CLC). Suring’s CLC operates under a grant program administered by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. The program is designed to offer academic assistance and enrichment to students who attend a school at which a minimum of 40 percent of students are eligible for free and reduced lunch.

Asphalt company honored for Highway 22 project
The National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) announced that Northeast Asphalt Inc. of Green Bay is the winner of the 2014 Sheldon G. Hayes Award for excellence in construction of an asphalt pavement. The award, bestowed annually since 1971, recognizes the country’s highest quality highway pavement. Officer returns to full-time work
At a Dec. 15 special meeting, the City Council approved the hire of Karl Goerlinger, effective Dec. 17, as a full-time officer for the Gillett Police Department. His wage was set at $20 an hour, and he is considered a second-year employee. Goerlinger, a part-time Gillett officer since March 2013, was promoted to full time in January 2014 as a limited-term employee, to fulfill the terms of a federal grant.

Gillett breaks ties with police sergeant
Allegations that the Gillett chief of police threatened and intimated a former girlfriend — accusations strongly denied by both parties — have led to a separation agreement between the city and the police sergeant who filed the incident report. Cornelia “Corki” Ford, Sophie Ford’s paternal grandmother, was a professional artist whose seaside paintings and other artwork are displayed at Ford’s coffee house, Corki’s Cup of Joy. “Painting was just really important to her—and cooking. Building up skills by breaking down church
Monday’s celebration of Groundhog Day took on a different look for people not spending the day on the path around the Falls. Here it was a sunny but brisk, single-digit start to the work week. Some parts of Wisconsin had almost a foot of new snow, and much of the New England region was shut down due to a second winter storm in as many weeks.

Ausloos to attend Badger Girls State
Josephine “Josie” Ausloos, a junior at Oconto Falls High School, has been selected as a Badger Girl by the Oconto Falls American Legion Auxiliary Unit 302. The daughter of Ron and Brenda Ausloos has participated in volleyball, basketball and track the past three years.

Wild game banquet, seminars set
Hillside Assembly of God Church in Gillett will hold its annual Wild Game Seminar and Supper on Saturday, Feb. 7, at Oconto Falls High School. The wild game potluck supper begins at 6 p.m. Attendees are invited to bring their favorite dish to pass. The doors open at 4 p.m. Twenty replicas of trophy whitetail mounts will be displayed. There will be three, one-hour seminars beginning at 5 p.m. and a featured seminar at 7 p.m. The 5 p.m.
