Marion High School senior Cassidy Detert advanced to the WIAA Division 3 state championship next weekend with two first-place finishes at the sectional meet Friday in Rosholt. Detert won the discus with a throw of 130 feet, 9 inches and the shot put with a toss of 40 feet, 9.25 inches. Gresham senior Drew Payne won a sectional title in the triple jump, going 43-08.00. Menominee Indian qualified two athletes for state.

Bonduel High School sophomore Emily Sorenson won the long jump Friday at the WIAA Division 2 sectional at Little Chute. Sorenson was the only jumper to top 17 feet.

Shawano Community High School senior Daniel Boivin won the WIAA Division 1 sectional championship in the pole vault Friday in Ashwaubenon. Boivin cleared the bar at 14 feet to punch his ticket to the state championships next week in La Crosse.

Shawano County’s deputy coroner will take over retiring Coroner Mike Jesse’s job as of Monday. Gov. Scott Walker on Thursday announced the appointment of Brian Westfahl to the post. “I am confident the skill set that Brian has developed as Shawano County deputy coroner will provide a smooth transition to coroner,” Walker said.
