The Shawano School Board got its first glance at its 2015-16 budget Monday, but, with several factors still to be determined, it might as well have been through beer goggles. The most important unknown factor is how much state aid the district will receive in the next two years. Gov.

Shawano School District continues to have more students coming in through open enrollment than going out. On Monday, the School Board unanimously approved 65 applications for students living outside the district to attend Shawano schools next school year. There were 71 applications in the latest cycle, which ran from Feb.

Thomas R. Tepiew, 68, of Keshena, started his journey to the spirit world on Friday afternoon, May 29, 2015, at Bellin Hospital in Green Bay, surrounded by family and friends. Tom was born on Oct. 4, 1946, in Keshena, a son of the late Mitchell “Monk” and Frances (Komanekin) Tepiew. He was a graduate of Shawano High School. On June 8, 1968, Tom entered the United States Army, where he served two tours of duty as a combat veteran in Vietnam.

Dean Donald Popelka, 90, of Shawano, passed away on Saturday, May 30, 2015, in Shawano. Dean was born in Shawano on April 19, 1925, the son of the late Emil and Margaret (Ainsworth) Popelka. He lived in the Shawano area all his life, owned and operated a dairy farm and owned a saw mill. Dean liked horses and went on pack trips and trail rides in South Dakota, Colorado and Wyoming.

Greg W. Korth, 56, of the town of Belle Plaine, Shawano County, passed away unexpectedly on Monday June 1, 2015, at the Grand Itasca Hospital in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. Gregory Wayne Korth was born Dec. 7, 1958, in Clintonville, the son of Lois (Westad) and the late Gordon “Tiny” R. Korth.

Brett A. Duffek, 56, of Bowler, passed away on Sunday, May 31, 2015, in Bowler. Brett was born in Milwaukee on Nov. 20, 1958, to the late Frederick J. and Tena M. (Vele) Duffek. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Stout with a bachelor’s degree in packaging engineering.

Mavis D. Marten, 69, of Hanover, Pennsylvania, and Tigerton, died Sunday, May 31, 2015, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital. She was born on Aug. 1, 1945, in Tigerton, the daughter of the late Lyle and Dolores (Griepentrog) Yonker. On July 10, 1965, Mavis was united in marriage to Floyd C. Marten at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Bowler.

Shawano County ranks among the highest counties in the state for deer-related crashes and the odds of running into a deer on the road will increase in June, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Deer activity increases this time of year as does search for places to give birth and young deer separate from their mothers.
