Walter E. “Wally” Schardt Jr., 75, of Shawano, went to his Eternal Home on Saturday morning, Jan. 16, 2016, at Evergreen Care Center, with his family by his side. Wally was born on Oct. 17, 1940, in Shawano, a son of the late Walter H. Sr. and Louise (Jesse) Schardt. He attended the Shawano schools, graduating from Shawano High School in 1958. Following high school, Wally became a Shawano County sheriff’s deputy.

After being forced into overtime by another Hail Mary from Aaron Rodgers, the Arizona Cardinals wasted no time calling for the "Hail Larry" to get to the NFC title game. On the first play of overtime, Carson Palmer spun away from a defender and throw across his body to an uncovered Larry Fitzgerald. The Shawano Community High School boys basketball team struggled offensively in the first half Friday, leaning on senior center Zeke Gueths to do the majority of the heavy lifting against West De Pere. Bowler High School sophomore Reanne Kietlinski came into the game at Gresham averaging 21 points per contest, and she did exactly that and more in a 49-33 victory Thursday night. The sophomore guard scored 11 points in the first half, almost as many as Gresham scored as a team (13), while getting her teammates involved offensively. “She’s an outstanding sophomore guard,” Bowler head coach AJ Miller said.

Russell P. Kostrzak, 91, of Tigerton, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2016, at his home. Russell Paul Kostrzak was born on May 30, 1924, in the town of Little Wolf, Waupaca County, to Louis and Polly (Clapps) Kostrzak. He graduated from Little Wolf High School in 1942 and then attended Marquette University in Milwaukee for one year. After high school, up until 1956, Russ worked on the family farm in the town of Little Wolf.

Wayne Owen, 80, of Cecil, passed away at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton on Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2016. Wayne was born in Mattoon on New Year’s Day 1936, the son of the late George and Edna (Pollock) Owen. He was a graduate of Mattoon High School, and shortly after graduation entered into military service in the United States Marine Corps.
