Bishop David L. Ricken of the Diocese of Green Bay will ordain deacon Ryan Starks, a 2006 graduate of Marion High School, to the priesthood at 10 a.m. May 31 at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral in Green Bay.
Starks’ home parish is St. Mary in Marion. The Teens Encounter Christ movement was instrumental in his faith development, he said, as was involvement with a Global Outreach camp, which is a high school exchange program founded in the Diocese of Green Bay.
After high school, Starks attended the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn. After one semester, he transferred into St. John Vianney College Seminary, located at the same university. In 2010, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy from the University of St. Thomas.
Starks, who spent two summers working at Allouez Catholic Cemetery, was ordained to the diaconate in June 2013. By the time he is ordained into the priesthood, he will have graduated from the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary with a Master of Divinity degree and a baccalaureate in sacred theology.
Deacon Brian Wideman, of Neenah, also will be ordained to the priesthood at the same Mass as Starks, and Edward Looney, of Oconto, will be ordained to the transitional diaconate.
Looney grew up in Oconto, graduated from Oconto High School in 2007 and worked at Camp Tekakwitha in Shawano in 2008.
