The Shawano Community High School track and field teams won conference championships in two events at the Bay Conference meet Saturday in Denmark.
The Hawks finished fifth in the boys meet and eighth in the girls meet but won both the 4x200-meter relays. Seymour won the girls and boys titles.
“With the (low) numbers (on the team), we were not really going to be able to compete as a team,” Shawano coach Scott Smurawa said. “So our focus changed to looking to more individual efforts. We were able to do that with both the boys 4x200 and the girls 4x200.”
Malory Soper, Isabella Gonzalez, Kia Smurawa and Kristina Kurtz won the girls 4x200 with a time of 1:52.81. Carlos Merino, Dan Boivin, Jake Klister and Brice Bergner won the boys event with a time of 1:36.38.
“They’ve been working to improve steadily throughout the year,” Smurawa said. “They pulled it off in (the conference meet), which is what you’re looking for.”
Gonzalez also took second in the high jump. Kia Smurawa took third in both the long jump and triple jump, and placed fourth in the 100 dash.
Soper, Gonzalez, Kristina Kurtz and Lindsey Kurtz finished third in the 4x400 relay. Lindsey Kurtz took fourth in the 800 run.
Zeke Gueths took second in the discus, getting a personal best of 123-10.
“He’s been throwing pretty steady,” Smurawa said. “He’s been consistent throughout the season.”
Boivin cleared 13 feet in the pole vault to take second place.
“That was nice for him,” Smurawa said. “He’s been working steady in the offseason. He’s been hitting the 12-foot, 12-6 range pretty often. He improved a lot over the course of the year.”
Jake Klister took second in the 1,600-meter run.
Bergner (100 dash), Austin Lhotka (3,200 run) and Merino (long jump) all had fourth-place finishes.
