Summer, fall sessions set for Strong Bones

The Shawano County University of Wisconsin-Extension office will be running two strength-training classes in the summer and two more classes in the fall. The Strong Bones Program classes meet at 8:30 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays from June 16 through Sept. 3 and at 7:30 Tuesdays and Thursdays from June 17 through Sept. 4 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Shawano. Registration also is open for the fall classes, which will meet at 8:30 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays from Sept. 8 through Nov. 19 and at 7:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays from Sept. 9 through Nov. 20. The Strong Bones Program was developed by Dr. Miriam Nelson and Dr. Rebecca Sequin at Tufts University in Massachusetts. It includes progressive weight training, flexibility and balance activities. The exercises are safe and effective for both men and women of all ages, including those that are not in perfect health. People with health concerns such as arthritis, heart disease, osteoporosis diabetes, obesity and back pain often benefit the most from an exercise program that includes lifting weights a few times each week. The class will use dumbbells, ankle weights and exercise mats. Participants are urged to wear comfortable shoes and clothing. The cost of the program is $25. Preregistration is encouraged, but participants also may register at the first class. For registration or information, call 715-526-6136 or email Kara.skarlupka@co.shawano.wi.us. Organizers also are looking to expand the Strong Bones Program to the Gresham and Bonduel areas.
