The College of Menominee Nation invites the public to a two-act play being staged on separate nights in Keshena and Oneida.
“Evening at the Warbonnet” will be presented at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the CMN Cultural Learning Center, N172 State Highway 47/55, Keshena, and at 6 p.m. Friday in the auditorium of the Norbert Hill Center, N7210 Seminary Road, Oneida. Admission is free.
The dramatic comedy was written by decorated Oneida playwright Bruce King. It has been published in numerous anthologies and staged throughout the country.
The production will mark the ninth time CMN has collaborated with the Oneida Arts Program to bring live theater to both the Menominee and Oneida communities.
The play, directed by CMN faculty member Ryan Winn, is targeted for an adult audience.
CMN students and community members involved in the play include the following: Dylan Benton, Melinda Cree, Leona Draghi, Lloyd Frieson, Kayeloni Heczko, Nathaniel Madsen, Autumn Michaletz, Jesse Norton, Colleen Rice, Elizabeth Rice, and Matthew Whitney.
The play is set in an urban Indian bar that is “just this side of the other side.” Throughout the first act of the show, the bar’s four patrons make their entrances and are reluctantly goaded into talking about their pasts. The bar’s two employees mix prodding questions, quick jokes and knowing glances as the night unfolds. It soon becomes clear that the Warbonnet is not just another bar, and that the bar will forever alter the patrons who visit it.
