Dwayne R. “Butch” Hanson, 87, of Shawano, passed away unexpectedly on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26, 2015, in Green Bay.
Dwayne was born on Jan. 29, 1928, in Clintonville, a son of the late David and Mary (Allen) Hanson. He was baptized at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church in 1928 and confirmed in 1942. Butch attended St. Martin’s Lutheran School and graduated from Shawano High School in 1946. While a freshman at SHS, he played on the high school’s state championship football team. Following graduation, he entered the United States Navy and served from 1946-1948. Butch was stationed in Lakehurst, New Jersey, with the ZP-1 Squadron as a parachute rigger. Upon returning from service, he was united in marriage to the former Lois Taylor on Jan. 8, 1949, at St. James Lutheran Church in Shawano.
Butch worked at the Badger Milk Plant, Werbelows Pop Factory and the Soo Line Railroad for 40 years as a section foreman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, ice fishing, bowling and his weekly sign-ins.
Butch is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Lois, of Shawano; his son, Todd (Marilyn) Hanson, of Shawano; his daughter, Jody (Mark) Buelow, of New London; eight grandchildren, Robin Bero (friend Rob Huber), of Green Bay, Pam (Brian) Schott, of De Pere; Patrick Much, of Clintonville, Lucas (Nicole) Much, of Bear Creek, Stephanie Buelow, of Menasha, Brittany Buelow, of La Crosse, Jenny (Mark) Mitchell, of Bonduel, and Sara (Scott) Carlson, of Crystal Lake, Illinois; nine great-grandchildren, Abby Bero, Jacob Bero, Payton Schott, McKinley Schott, Bennett Schott, Teddy Much, Nathan Much, Johnathan Carlson and James Carlson; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Donald Hanson; his sister, Virginia Peterman; his sisters-in-law, Irene Wilson and Gertrude Hanson; his brothers-in-law, Wilbert Peterman, Frank Wilson and William Gomane; and his nephews, Jim Peterman, Bob Hanson, Tom Hanson and Butchie Wilson.
Funeral services for Dwayne “Butch” Hanson will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2015, at 11 a.m. at St. James Lutheran Church of Shawano. Pastor Ted Andrada will officiate. Interment will be in St. Martin’s Lutheran Cemetery, Clintonville. Relatives and friends may call at St. James Lutheran Church on Wednesday from 9-11 a.m. Full military honors will be conducted by the Shawano Legion Post 117 at the church.
