Clintonville School District administrators plan to implement a new schedule at the high school next year.
Principal Lance Bagstad outlined a Day 1-Day 2 block schedule for the School Board this week. It includes four 85-minute class periods each day, with each class meeting every other day instead of daily. Classes currently are 48 minutes long.
The proposed schedule wouldn’t change the length of the school day or the start and end time, Bagstad said.
The new schedule would reduce the number of times that students would pass through the halls each day from nine to five and would allow more opportunities for students to take additional electives, he said.
Under the proposed schedule, teachers would teach three blocks per day and have one block to use for prep time.
According to Bagstad, an advisory vote taken among 36 teachers showed 27 were in favor of the proposed schedule, six were opposed, and three didn’t have a preference.
“The one thing I would say is this is not a simple tweaking,” board president Ben Huber said. “This is a significant change.”
Huber said he had concerns about students missing too much class time if they miss a day of school or a substitute teacher is needed.
“That’s like missing two days in a row, and I think that’s a significant issue,” he said.
Board member Jim Schultz favored the proposed schedule, noting that science teachers would like it because they could get lab work completed during one class session rather than two.
Bagstad said the building leadership team would meet soon to make a final decision about the proposed schedule. Superintendent Tom O’Toole noted the schedule change did not require board approval.
