Karen Kay Smoot, 79, Gillett, passed away at home on Monday, Feb. 10, 2014, with her family by her side. Karen was born Nov. 8, 1934, to the late Leonard and Dorothy (Arnold) Janke in Milwaukee.
She grew up in Hartland and married Lawrence “Dick” Smoot on Oct. 10, 1961, in Waukegan, Ill. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing and fishing and was an avid reader. Karen enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Karen is survived by her husband, Dick, of Gillett; four children, Richard (Tammy) Tulogeski, of Oconto Falls, Robin (Gene) Peterson, of Oconto Falls, Jodie Birr, of Suring, and Larry (Arthur) Smoot, of Peterborough, Ontario, Canada; two siblings, Janice Klink, of Hartland, and Jess (Kay) Janke, of Hartland; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Pat Klink, and a great-grandson, Angelo.
A gathering of family and friends will be held at Gruetzmacher Funeral Home in Suring on Saturday, Feb. 15, from 11 a.m. until the memorial service at 1 p.m., with Pastor Bill Kamke officiating. Karen will be interred in Hickory Cemetery in spring.
