The Oconto Falls American Legion baseball team improved to 2-0 with a 4-3 win over Menominee on a windy Thursday in Keshena.
“It was one of those games where, we’re done now, and I’m still not comfortable that we won,” Oconto Falls coach Chris Hillberg said. “You never knew which way it was going to go.”
Oconto Falls got a lead in the first inning when Dylan Woosman hit a bases-loaded RBI single.
In the top of the third, Alex Johnson hit a triple and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Connor Sefcik to give Oconto Falls a 2-0 lead.
Menominee cut the lead in half on a RBI single by pitcher Richard Corn in the bottom of the frame.
Brett Ash hit an RBI single in the fourth, and Luke Truckey had an RBI single in the sixth to put Oconto Falls up 4-1.
Menominee threatened in the bottom of the sixth. RBI singles by Dallas Madosh and Brian Madosh put the tying run on second. Both advanced when pitcher Hunter Magnin had a pitch sail wide, but Michael Pecore, batting at the top of the order, grounded out to end the frame.
Menominee managed to get two more runners on base in the seventh but went scoreless.
“The bottom of the order gave us a chance to win the game,” Menominee coach Brandon Frechette said. “Our No. 2-3-4 hitters came up in the seventh inning. We couldn’t have asked for much more. You don’t want to put the pressure on them, but those are the hitters you want up and that’s who we had up.”
“It was a good ballgame,” Hillberg said. “Their guy threw well. Hunter, I’ve seen Hunter throw better. He struggled throwing into that wind. He battled through and made the most of it.”
Magnin allowed three runs on six hits in seven innings on the mound. He struck out six and walked five. Woosman was 3 for 4. Truckey had two hits and an RBI.
Corn gave up four runs on 10 hits, struck out two and walked one in seven innings.
“I thought he threw great,” Frechette said. “The wind was a factor on the field. It was a factor on the mound. I thought he did real well. He gave us every chance to win the game.”
Hillberg said he likes the way his team is coming together early in the season. Oconto Falls opened the season with a 12-2 victory over Little Chute on June 11.
“We’re going to hit for contact,” Hillberg said. “We don’t have a lot of power hitters. We’re going to play some small ball, move some guys around and keep the ball in play. If we pitch well, I like our chances. We’ve got a good defense and some speed on the team.”
