Kellie Claflin, agriscience educator at Gillett Secondary School, recently attended an eight-day professional development institute at the University of Kentucky to teach the principles of agricultural science-plant section of the Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education (CASE).
CASE is an instructional system that is changing the culture of agriculture programs in the United States through intense teacher professional development, inquiry-based, student-focused lessons, assessment and certification. CASE equips teachers to elevate student experiences in the agriculture classroom and prepares students for success in college and careers emphasizing science, technology, engineering and math.
While at the CASE Institute, Claflin spent 65 hours working through nearly every lesson in the yearlong curriculum and learning how to deliver lessons in an inquiry-based way that will shift the focus in the classroom from teacher-led to student-directed learning.
“The CASE plant science curriculum gets students taking charge of their learning with projects and hands-on labs,” Claflin said. “It’s a great addition to the Gillett ag program, and I am excited to put it into action.”
Claflin received a scholarship from Mosaic as a special project of the National FFA Foundation. The scholarship covered the training, curriculum, resources, housing and food throughout the eight-day training.
