Residents in the city of Gillett owning 20 or more acres will be allowed bow hunting privileges on their properties, effective last week. The Gillett City Council on Thursday approved a policy providing guidelines for bow hunters hunting on property within the city limits.
“This will only affect one, maybe two, property owners,” said Gillett Mayor Irene Drake. Gregg Riemer, who owns property on South Green Bay Avenue in the city limits, has bow hunted there for a number of years, Drake said.
City Attorney Tim Schmid in October recommended the city develop a more formal policy regarding hunting.
According to the new policy:
-The city will reserve the right to limit the number of hunters who can hunt on a property.
-Hunters are required to have a completed Policy for Controlled Bow Hunting for Harvesting Deer form in their possession.
-Land owners must provide a certificate of liability insurance to the city before allowing hunting on the property.
-Hunters must have valid a Wisconsin hunting license and follow all Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources rules and regulations.
-Blaze orange must be worn while walking to and from hunting stands.
