LeRoy “Charlie” Christenson, 84, of Suring (town of Breed), passed away with his family by his side on Monday, Jan. 26, 2015.
Charlie was born in Crandon in 1930 to the late Hilda and John Christenson. He grew up in the town of Breed, where he met his wife, Betty Piso. Charlie married Betty on Aug. 23, 1952, in the town of Breed and later moved to Neenah in 1957 to raise their family.
He retired from American Can Company at the age of 57, and he and Betty returned to the town of Breed to enjoy their retirement in their dream home on the Oconto River.
They enjoyed renovating old homes and investing in real estate, which included several storage units. They also enjoyed going to the casino and fishing trips to Canada in their Winnebago camper.
Charlie was very proud of the log workshop he built by hand and his landscaped yard. Woodworking was his passion, and he loved making small crafts for Betty, which she used for her Ukrainian artwork.
Charlie is survived by six children, Cindy (Don) Long-Schultz, of Appleton, Mark Christenson, of Suring, Steve (Lynn) Christenson, of Neenah, Jeff Christenson, of Neenah, Phillip (Shawn) Christenson, of Seymour, and Sarah (Robert Will) Christenson, of Neenah; eight grandchildren, Jeffrey, Jessica, Charlie, Dana, Angela (Brian), Emily, Trevor and Andrew; sister, Carol (Leo) Meyer, of Crivitz; and brother, Jim (Betty) Christenson, of Beaver Dam. Charlie is further survived by a special aunt, Dorothy Winter, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Charlie was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; his sisters, Joy Christenson and Helen Meyers; his brother, Jack Christenson; and daughter-in-law, Ann Christenson.
Visitation was held Saturday, Jan. 31, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Suring from 10 a.m. until the memorial service at 12 p.m., with the Rev. David Barrett officiating.
Gruetzmacher Funeral Home in Suring is assisting the family.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
