To the editor:
We would like to thank everyone who attended our Aug. 1 event, “Happy 250th Birthday, USA: A Land of Immigrants and Indigenous People,” at Equity Hall in Pound.
When reading the stories of immigrants who came to the United States years ago, we learn how they persisted and endured despite the difficult decision to leave their homelands and the long journey they faced. They believed they were coming to a land where they could provide a better life for their families.
As a literacy council, we hear many of these same stories today from individuals who sometimes risk their lives to give their children a better future. We are fortunate to live in a country that others still strive to be a part of, and we hope we can all learn from each other and live together in peace.
We also want to thank everyone who participated in the event by sharing stories and food from their own heritage. Appreciation is also extended to our Native American neighbors who shared information about their history, as well as everyone who contributed to the patriotic songs, readings, a skit and dancing.
Maybe, in 250 more years, there will be more celebrations. Until then, may God bless America.
