The city of Shawano has declared a snow emergency from 8 p.m. March 14 to noon March 16 in anticipation of the coming snowstorm affecting the state of Wisconsin over the weekend.
During the emergency, no one can park on city streets from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. During the other hours, parking on city streets is limited to two hours.
Crews will be working to clear streets throughout the day and overnight as necessary. Main streets will be plowed throughout, while secondary streets will be plowed as frequently as possible. Low-volume residential streets may not be plowed until the storm ends. A street may be advanced to a higher priority for plowing where there are bridges, steep hills or other safety concerns.
Plows must make two to four passes down a street to clear it curb to curb, and snow is plowed back to the curb to maintain the road width, keeping roads safer for vehicles. It is best to wait for plows to finish on the road before residents shovel out their driveway approach.
Parked and abandoned vehicles present obstacles to plows attempting to get as close to the curb as possible. Crews regularly need to repeat plowing the night after a snow event to get where vehicles have previously parked and to plow corners back to the curb to expose catch basins. This may result in snow being deposited in the driveway after previously being shoveled.
