The Wisconsin Department of Transportation announced the launch of a dedicated 511 Wisconsin construction website for the upcoming reconstruction project on state Highway 22 in Gillett.
The new site, available at https://projects.511wi.gov/22gillett, provides comprehensive details on construction operations, anticipated traffic impacts, detour routes and information for local businesses on temporary signing opportunities during the 2026 project.
The project involves full reconstruction of approximately 1.08 miles of Highway 22 from Finnegan Lake Road to the Highway 22/32 intersection in downtown Gillett.
Key improvements include new concrete pavement, sidewalk, and curb and gutter; new storm sewer installation; culvert replacements (including extension of the Christie Brook box culvert); multiple intersection enhancements; and addition of parking lanes between West Park Street and East Washington Street.
A project display map on the website illustrates these construction elements for easy reference.
Construction is scheduled to begin in spring and conclude by October. During this period, Highway 22 will be closed to through traffic, with access maintained for residents, businesses and emergency services within the work zone. Primary detours include County Road R, County Road H and Highway 32 (with a temporary one-month change due to a separate bridge project in Cecil).
Businesses affected by the project may apply for free temporary business signing permits through the website to help guide customers during construction.
This reconstruction will replace aging infrastructure with modern standards, improving safety, accessibility and quality of life in downtown Gillett, according to the DOT.
