Shawano County District 22 Supervisor Raymond Rigsby is slated to become the next Shawano County clerk.
Rigsby was recommended for the post by the county’s executive committee July 2. The final decision is up to the full county board, which will vote when it meets July 23.
“I’m very excited for the opportunity to continue to work in government,” Rigsby said. “After 24 years in the military (U.S. Army), I want to continue to give back.”
Rigsby is currently the District 22 supervisor and will resign that post before accepting the county clerk job.
He is also the town clerk in the Town of Seneca and expects to continue in that role, at least for now.
“I’ve been there for 10 years and have another year left in my current term,” he said. “I know (former Clerk) Kara (Skarlupka) was also town clerk in the Town of Washington, and she handled both. If it gets to be a struggle, I’ll give up the town clerk job.”
Rigsby said accepting the county clerk job is also bittersweet as he will have to resign his job as a special education teacher in the Gresham School District.
“After finally getting my teaching degree and working in the district the past years, it’ll be disappointing to have to quit,” he said. “Before the full-time teaching, I did a lot of subbing in the Bowler, Wittenberg-Birnamwood, Shawano and Gresham districts.”
Rigsby said he will begin his county clerk duties moments after the board votes to appoint him.
Skarlupka announced her retirement effective July 11, with another 3 1/2 years remaining in her four-year term. Rigsby’s appointment will be for the duration of Skarlupka’s term.
At some point, there will most likely be an appointment to fill Rigsby’s unexpired term as supervisor. The district includes all of the Town of Seneca, all of the Town of Grant, all of the city of Marion and Ward 2 in the Town of Morris.
