The Gillett City Council approved three financial contributions to boost local tourism and economic development during its regular monthly meeting May 1.
Council members OK’d a $2,000 joint marketing agreement with the Tourism and Economic Development Corporation for the Oconto Region (TEDCOR), $1,000 toward the fireworks display at the Gillett Independence Day celebration and $250 to support the annual Roy Hubbard Memorial Truck Show at Zippel Park.
TEDCOR, formerly known as the Oconto County Economic Development Corporation, is a nonprofit organization that works to promote a flourishing local economic climate, including attracting and retaining business and industry.
The nonprofit’s successes have included helping Encompass to establish a child care center in Oconto Falls and jump-starting downtown revitalization efforts in Lena and Suring.
Gillett is the center of Oconto County’s Independence Day celebration every year. The city bustles with activity on July 3-4, including live music, a car show and parade, capped by the fireworks display in Zippel Park at dusk July 4.
Hubbard, who died in 1987 at age 74, founded Roy Hubbard Rental Trucking Inc. in the 1930s and spent 45 years in the trucking industry.The show was created in 2018 to honor his lifetime of work in the Gillett area.
