The Wittenberg Village Board on July 16 approved having curbs and gutters installed in the village’s business park.
Trustee David Timm said consultant Mary Jo Miller with Martenson and Eisele recommended the board make a decision on whether there should be curb and gutter throughout the whole park or just in the residential area, like the planned new apartment complex to be built by S.C. Swiderski.
“Once we get into the industrial area, my opinion is we don’t need curb and gutter,” Timm said. “They would just have the slopes in that area for the water to run, which would save us, Mary Jo said, in excess of $100,000.”
There’s no timetable for when the work would be done, according to Timm, but Martenson and Eisele needed to know the curb and gutter locations before completing the design plan for the business park.
Board member Paul Yeager recommended installing curb and gutter, noting there have been some instances where it wasn’t installed, and segments of the asphalt split as a result.
“I’m not saying we have to have it, but it’d be nice to have,” Yeager said. “We’re liking the idea of curb and gutter on our residential streets.”
Timm pointed out that such a thing was necessary for the full board to approve.
“Instead of me making this decision — I didn’t think it was my decision to make — so I wanted the whole board to see if you were on the same page,” Timm said.
